Lassie Buns

For anyone who is from Newfoundland, you will know what I mean when I say "lassie buns" :-) They are yummy! Every time my youngest sister comes for a visit, I make her some molasses buns. She always says she gains 5 lbs when she comes here :-) Oh well!

Molasses Buns

1 cup molasses
1 cup melted butter
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
4 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tsp ginger
2 tsp ground cloves
2 tsp baking soda
pinch of salt

Add melted butter to molasses and stir. Add milk and egg. Stir. Mix dry ingredients in separate bowl, then add to molasses mixture. Roll out on a floured board to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter (I use a 2-inch round) and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 12 minutes at 300 deg.

We love them with butter though I know some people who eat them with a slice of cheddar cheese.

I am from Nl also. Made your recipe today, rolled them too thin, they were the most scrumptious Molasses cookies ever. Tasted better than Tim Hortons Molasses and Ginger cookies. My Mom used to make really yummy molasses buns that were dripping with home made churned butter as we had a cow. However, I never liked them on day 2 , they were always crumbly and stuck to the roof of your mouth. Mind you ... my dad was a logger and never went into the woods without his lassie Buns as they provided the energy he needed to get through the day. I think, I will not bother with the Bun... roll to 1/4 inch and you will have the most fantastic cookie. My mainlander grandkids just loved them.

I'm going to try your recipe and compare it with the one I use, which was handed down by my Newfoundland grandmother. Mine doesn't call for eggs or milk:

Cream together until smooth
3/4 cup margarine
1/2 cup sugar

Add (but don't stir)
1 cup molasses
1 heaping teaspoon baking soda
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp allspice
1 tsp ginger

Pour 1/2 cup boiling water over top and stir well to combine.

Add 3 cups flour and mix well. Knead in enough flour to make a soft dough.

Roll out about 1/2 inch thick, cut with a round cookie cutter and bake them at 375 C on a greased cookie sheet for about 15 minutes.

I'm making molasses buns today but I have a recipe that my Nan makes. You can check my recipe out at my site: http://aditl-dmj.blogspot.com/ .

I may try your recipe sometime also to see if there is a difference. I think my Nan's is a little dry sometimes.

I'm also from NL but I'm living in BC.
